Mothers' Union

There has been a Mothers' Union branch at St Mary Magdalene's for over 80 years. Our banner, of which we are very proud, is kept in the chancel and taken to Diocesan and Deanery events. The present banner is relatively new, but incorporates some of the old banner; it was dedicated in 1998.

Our banner lead out the procession of Mothers' Union Banners from our church, on the occaision of the special Morthers' Union 110th Anniversary Service in 2013.

We currently hold two meetings each month. The Afternoon group meet on the last Monday of the month (except Bank Holidays), at 2pm, in the church. We usually have a short service or prayers, followed by a speaker; we finish with tea and scones. The Evening group meet on the third Wednesday of each month – in church during the summer and in various members' homes during the winter. We do not have speakers at this meeting, but have more of a discussion group.

We support all church activities, sidespersons, readers, intercessors, we help with the Craft Guild. We also support all Diocesan and Deanery meetings and events.

The Mothers' Union is an international Christian charity that seeks to support families worldwide.

In 83 countries, our members share one heartfelt vision - to bring about a world where God's love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships. This is not a vague hope, but a goal we actively pursue through prayer, programmes, policy work and community relationships. By supporting marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity, we tackle the most urgent needs challenging relationships and communities.

Our members are not all mothers, or even all women. Single, married, parents, grandparents, or young adults just beginning to express their social conscience. For all 4 million members what Mothers' Union provides is a network through which they can serve Christ in their own community - through prayer, financial support and actively working at the grassroots level in programmes that meet local needs. We lobby local and national governments on issues affecting family life and campaign to challenge legislation that neglects the vulnerable and marginalised. We are also represented at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

The Mothers’ Union Prayer

Loving Lord,
We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers' Union
as we seek to share your love
through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus' name.
Amen

The Wave of Prayer is an offering of prayer from and for Mothers' Union around the world. It is something that concerns every member as all take part in prayer for Mothers' Union in each diocese of the Anglican Communion in turn. Specific days in the year are therefore allocated to each diocese when prayers are focused on their work and needs.
